Hey

Could I somehow make my gigaworks 7.1 speakers work with a PS3, through the PC perhaps?? Really wanna go Blu-ray soon and I'm tempted to just go out and buy a PS3 - which would be my first console since the SNES - but not if I'd have to buy new speakers.

The speakers are standard PC speakers with the usual 3x 7mm jacks, the only input on the soundcard is analogue and wouldn't carry surround I'm guessing. I've read while searching around that if I connected it via optical the surround would be carried...is this true? I could buy a new soundcard that has optical input.

Just to fix the link...I don't know the answer.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Creative GigaWorks S750 Speaker System Review: Beyond Ultra Sound
at first glance it seems there is no fibre connection:

I've had devices that the optical input used the same jack as the phono jack but in this case, as found on page four of the above link:

Regrettably, the Creative GigaWorks S750 doesn’t have an additional digital input, so you only have to connect it to the audio card using the analog outputs.

Cheers Unicus, forgot that I C&P from another forum
_________

No the speakers don't have optical in, only analogue. The soundcard in the PC on the other hand would have an optical input.

You could never play the HD Soundformats though. Like DTS HD or True HD. Aside from that it would work. It would better though if you'd buy a real receiver with a 5.1 speaker set. (they are pretty cheap by now)

Thanks for all the feedback

Just one last thing. If you buy Speakers that have an amplifier integrated make sure it has either coaxial or optical audio inputs.
(I don't know which of these the PS 3 has but you should take speakers where you can connect them that way)

PS3 has optical output...went out and bought one an hour after my last post!

For the time being I'll be getting a soundcard with optical input and using my current speakers as I'm more than happy with them.

Going back to playing metal gear solid 4 now!

That seems to be the cheapest solution.

Have fun and welcome to the age of Blu

Actually, do you know of any PCI soundcards that support Dolby Digital decoding, with an optical input?

Or

Are there any recievers that would support the speakers? The sub has 4x 7mm jacks on the back...

Thanks

Watch out! that you have optical fibre input and not only output on the soundcard.

If your current sound card is one of these:

Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit
Sound Blaster Audigy Value/SE
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Value
Sound Blaster Audigy 4
Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic
Sound Blaster X-Fi Platinum
Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty
Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro

It will not work with any other model of Sound Blaster card.
you could look for this:
The Creative® Digital I/O Module adds optical and coaxial digital I/O to your Sound Blaster

other wise:
PCI Express Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Professional Series sound card or something comparable.

My current card is an Audigy 2 ZS. Its not on that list (or even their site for that matter) but I've sent an email to creative asking if its compatible. Failing that though I just found this (the one you posted is PCI-E whereas I need PCI) that has DTS-ES and DD-EX decoding and optical I/O but doesn't say anywhere wether its 5.1 or 7.1.
On creative's site the picture is different for what appears to be the same product.
Better pic here

Creative got back to me, the module isn't supported.

I told them exactly what it was that I wanted to achieve and asked what card would be suitable and I got this back:

With regards to your inquiry, any of our speakers with an X-Fi I/O Drive
will work with your PlayStation 3. I will recommend our Sound Blaster®
X-Fi Platinum Fatal1ty Champion Series sound card. However, Gigaworks
speakers are analog speakers which will not work with the digital output
from your PS3.Therefore, you need a pair of digital speakers.

I'm not sure what they mean by the bit bolded by me, I clearly explained that I want to connect the speakers to the soundcard and the soundcard to the PS3. Do they think I want to connect the speakers directly to the PS3 or are they saying it cant be done at all?

A guy on another forum said that it would be possible to use a standalone reciever with my speakers by simply cutting the wires and attaching RCA connectors. Anyone confirm this?

Ok after a few email exchanges with Creative I'm beginning to think this isn't possible.

Anyone got any thoughts on the last part of my previous post?

This is an image of the connections on my sub (as posted by Giga):
