| Posted: | | | | Well, with my old computer I had to avoid too many add ons, but for about 6 months I have a new one, and so I care more than just a little bit about awards, too. So the Awards-Tool is great stuff. Respect for the ones who did all the data. So far I am mostly on the Academy Award, quite sure the other awards will be kind of "interesting" later, too, but the Oscar might cost me a lot of time.
So now using the tool with it's database, I got a shock! Practically ALL Oscars are in the database with one year to early!
E. g. "Asphalt-Cowboy" (OT: "Midnight Cowboy") recieved several Oscars at the Academy Awards in 1970 - but they are all listed in the tool with 1969.
Am I the first one who recognized this? If not: Do you care about that?
I do for one simple reason: Academy Awards are always around the beginning of April. And now - in case of Asphalt-Cowboy - I have to ask, how a movie could be honored in the beginning of April when it started at cinema at the end of May? |

| Posted: | | | | I assume that the Awards Tool lists the year of the movie's release, not the year of the award. The Academy Awards are always given for films released in the previous calendar year only. | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users. Gunnar |

| Posted: | | | | That's true in something like 95 % of the cases... but there are some in between, where the year of the Award is the same as the year of the movie, and others sometimes are 2 or 3 years before.
So this way I think the assumption goes wrong that way:
When the headline says "Academy Award (19XX)"
The year in brackets should show the year of the Awards, not of the movie. Doesn't it? |

| Posted: | | | | I looked at the data file for the Academy Awards to see if there is any obvious connection to the movies release year, and I find that there is not. So I'll have to agree that it would be logical to show the award year. If you want Tom to do anything about it, I guess it would be best to post a request about it in the official thread. | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users. Gunnar |

| Posted: | | | | I'll give it a try.
Altough I don't exactly understand what connection you are searching for? imo if there is a year behind the award, this should be the year when the award was given.
Maybe best to understand my worries: Check out any year of the Academy Awards in the tool and compare this data with the Academy Awards on Wikipedia - one year later! And you will find out that the data is the same |

| Posted: | | | | I seem to remember from trivia nights these trick questions: Who won the Academy Award for Best Picture IN [yyyy]? <== the answer referred to the Award ceremony year Who won the Academy Award for Best Picture FOR [yyyy]? <== the answer referred to the eligibily year(s)
The film eligibility period for past Academy Award ceremony years were, I believe:
Ceremony Year / Eligibily Period
• 1929-1932: 01 Aug - 31 Jul (1st-5th Academy Awards) The 1st Academy Awards ceremony (held May, 1929) was for films released from 01-Aug-1927 to 31-Jul-1928. The 2nd and 3rd ceremonies were held in 1930 (02Apr and 05Nov, respectively).
• 1934: 01 Aug 1932 - 31 Dec 1933 (6th Academy Awards) There was no award ceremony held in 1933.
• 1935-2020: 01 Jan - 31 Dec (7th-92nd Academy Awards)
• 2021: 01 Jan 2020 - 28 Feb 2021 (93rd Academy Awards - held April, 2021)
• 2022: 01 Mar 2021 - 31 Dec 2021 (94th Academy Awards)
• 2023-2025: 01 Jan - 31 Dec (95th-97th Academy Awards)
So its possible for a film to have the same release year as the award ceremony year (1930 and 2021).
It is also possible for a film to be released two years before the award ceremony year. For example, WINGS (1927) was the best picture winner at the 1st Academy Awards (award ceremony held in 1929).
Excluding ceremonies 1929-1932 and 2021, the eligibility period ended on 31 Dec and the award ceremony occurred the followng year.
Award ceremony years whose eligibility periods spanned aross two years were 1929-1932, 1934 and 2021.
I'm not familiar with the Awards tool you are using, but you can use the above ceremony/eligibilty years to determine whether the dates shown in the tool refer to the film's release year (within the eligibility period) or the subsequent award ceremony year.
Hope that helps. |
