I was horrified yesterday when I took out my Film Noir Classic Collection Vol. 4 collection from Warner Brothers only to learn that 2 of the discs no longer work and only one film on another disc works. Tried it on four separate players (DVD & Blu-ray) with same results. No physical sign of disc rot and the discs look brand new so I can only assume it's some type of degradation as the discs worked perfectly when I first bought the set. I looked it up on amazon and 55% percent of the reviews stated the same thing, that the set over time was rendered unplayable despite no signs of rot. Apparently this set is notorious for it, including many other Warner Bros. releases in released between 2006-2007. Anyone here have similar issues?

I checked my vol 4, and they all seemed ok. I haven't checked the other four volumes. I hope they are good, too.

I have several old Warner discs that no longer play properly.  Apparently this has something to do with the plant they were manufactured at back in the day.

Sounds like Bit Rot. You may want to look into backing up your DVD collection to a NAS to protect your investment.

That's worked for the ones that still play.

Just keep in mind that hard drives will also fail one day and also that RAID is not a backup.

I'll soon have a second TrueNAS system online so I don't have to keep my Plex backups on USB drives.

Had the same sort of issue with “G-men” from Warner, no scratches or other visible issues but movie stops playing towards the end, chapter skipping doesn’t work although chapter select choosing a chapter after the chapter with issues does.

However, can’t watch the movie.

Recently went through Film Boir collection 1 & 2 for profiling but those played without problem.

I think most of the Warner discs with playback problems have issues with the layer change.  It seems to have been a manufacturing defect.

In my collection, there are 16 Studios that start with the word "Warner". Is there any particular one, or all of them I have to search for? I want to see if there are any DVDs I care enough about to pull them for a test.

There has been quite a lengthy discussion about it on The Home Theater Forum.  I haven't read the entire thread but here is a good place to start.

Found out through that Home Theater Forum that the Superman Christopher Reeve Collection box set I have is one of the sets that's affected. I prepared myself for the worst and sure enough, 4 discs in the set will not load and 3 will load but will pixilate and freeze during the movie. Some of the discs are even starting to show signs of rot. I instantly ordered a cheap quadruple feature off of amazon to replace the films but this has me majorly bummed. It was a beautiful set. Makes me fear other discs in my collection are suffering from the same fate

I'm sorry for being so uninformed in this area, but I still don't understand the best way to determine which DVDs are candidates for my concern. When I filter my profiles by "Studio", I get a list that includes 16 entries that contain the name "Warner" or "Warner Bros". Are all of these DVDs released between 2006 and 2010(?) suspect, or only some of those studios?

The list I see:

Warner Animaton Group
Warner Bros Entertainment
Warner Bros Pictures
Warner Bros.
Warner Bros. Animation
Warner Bros. Entertainment
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Benelux
Warner Bros. Pictures
Warner Bros. Television
Warner Home Video
Warner Home Video Benelux
Warner Music Video
Warner Music Vision
Warner Premiere
Warner-Elektra-Atlantic
WE &Co

Warner is Warner.  This problem seems to mainly affect Warner but is not limited to Warner.  It seems to be related to the manufacturing process at the plant (which is no longer in operation) the discs were made at.  My previous post has a link to more information.

The vast majority of my pre 2010 Warner discs still seem to play OK.  Several do not.  I think you will have to check yours for yourself as not every copy of a particular title has necessarily become unplayable, though some titles seem to have very high failure rates.

Um, ok thanks.  I think that means I have to check every disc that gets filtered by that list. Unless somebody can just tell me, someday I will read that forum link and determine the correct date range.

I basically take the approach "it is what it is".

Will I be better off knowing which of my old Warner discs are corrupt? They'll most likely be oop so I can't re-buy them anyway. If and when I pull out an old DVD to rewatch and find it to be corrupt, then I may start looking for a newer replacement, preferably on blu-ray.
