Ken,

I do have one question that hopefully you can advise us on.

We have instances where there is a conflict between using the disc ID of the first disc in a single season TV season for the "child profile" just for the first disc in that season, and that same disc ID is needed to profile the entire season when that season is a child of a "Complete Series" of a TV show.

Can you provide some guidance on this please?

My initial thought is that in either case, disc-level profiles should have content only from that disc.  How often does this occur?  Since we don't have grandchild profiles at the moment, how do you enter them currently.

I am not sure that I was clear.

A Season 1 of XYZ TV show is released.  Disc 1 of Season 1 has Disc ID "ABC".

A child profile using Disc ID "ABC" is created containing information only about the 4 episodes that are on that disc.  Disc ID "ABC" is added to the parent profile for Season 1 of XYZ TV show.

Later, Seasons 1 through 7 of XYZ TV show are released as a complete set.  Each season is in it's own digipak, but they do not have UPC's on them.  Therefore, the only way to create a boxset for the XYZ Complete Series is to use disc ID from the first dsc of each season to profile that season, in other words Disc ID "ABC" would be set up as the profile for the entire Season 1 of XYZ TV show.

Since Disc ID "ABC" has already been used in the first scenario to profile the first four episodes of Season 1 of XYZ TV show, there is a conflict with setting it up as the entire Season 1 of XYZ TV show.

As Pete pointed out this is becoming more and more common as Complete Series are released.

One possible solution would be to add all of the individual disc level child profiles for each of the individual seasons to the parent "Complete Series" parent profile rather than creating "Season" level profiles and adding them to the Complete Series profile.  Problem is that is not the way the current rules tell us to do it and you would have no place for the Season artwork; a situation that Skip and others  feel is totally unacceptable.

Hope that's clearer.
Hal

That's a lot of work!
Would it not be easier to search for the individual seasons by title (as they no doubt would already exist in the db) and add them that way? Or would that not work?

Hal, wouldn't that fall under the rules as a re-release and the original release takes precedent?

The Charmed set just has the eight separately-released box sets in it, UPCs on the boxes so no problem. The issue is with sets such as Buffy/Angel/Alias which have custom packaging for the seasons within so there is no UPC, therefore the first disc ID in each season is up for grabs between the season and the first disc-level profile.

I don't know what region it was for... but I seen pics of  a Charmed: Book of Shadows Set on the net before... that was all 8 seasons in a Book of Shadows replicate... wish I could find it now... but I can't... figures.

i don't see how this statement from Ken leaves anything up for grabs if you mean filling up the disc 1 with info from the entire season. I have, however, inquired about the meaning of above statement in regards to this issue.

I just wanted to check,, so I got this right?

The (individual) season box set is the parent profile set by a UPC and contains the info for all the discs; each disc may also have a child profile set by ID containing only the disc's info.

Until grand-children are added to the profiler, could the multi-season owners add their box set by UPC as the parent, and then add the individual parents from above (searching title I guess) to the profile as children? Or is that not possible using the program? Can a parent profile in one database, be a child profile in someone else's?

edit: oops, I think Krik got in first.

If you have a multiseason set you really only have two options.  1) add a child profile for every disc that is in your set just like what is in a season set.  2) Add a season via UPC to your multiseason set, you will not be able to add a season via disc ID (as far as the online DB is concerned) since that disc ID is taken up now by the child profile of a season set in the online DB (what you do locally doesn't matter).

Oh yeah third option is have no child profiles to your multiseason set.

That is sweet looking. I bet Season 8 was not a done deal when that came out as Season 8 almost never happened.

with a "page" allocated for the final season!

So they thought ahead... so that is extra Sweet!

I'd forgotten about that one! I was dead jealous about that set, that I would have to import... then they announced the wooden chest for the UK and all was well with the world again.

Try presenting all the facts first.

#1.  That first disc is likely one that has been there long before the mega boxset came along, therefore it takes precedence.

#2.  The megaset can still be profiled using child level by doing each disc individually.
