That's just... stupid.  What a dumb move.  I had planned on picking up a dual drive for my PC and upgrading my PowerDVD7 to be able to play my HD and Blu-ray movies.  But I guess that won't be happening.

So now that PowerDVD has shot themselves in the foot.. what's another alternative for playing HD and blu-ray movies on your PC?

I'm coming a little late to this discussion, but I thought I would share the discovery I made. I have the LG GGC-H20L HD-DVD & Blu-ray ROM drive, that I picked up at Fry's not too long ago. I was running Cyberlink 7.3 Ultra and up until I got The Day The Earth Stood Still: 3-Disc Edition, I had no problem playing back both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD titles on my computer.
The other day, I popped in the 1951 version, as I was creating a child profile for that from a clone of the Regular release that had come out earlier, and I was informed that I needed to update my software with a patch to play this Blu-Ray disc. No problem. I downloaded the patch, installed it, and the menu loaded, but I couldn't navigate or anything. I decided that perhaps I should upgrade my version of PowerDVD and looked on their website for my upgrade options. I could only buy version 9. I didn't notice or know that they had removed HD-DVD playback, until after I had paid for it, downloaded it, and installed it.
Needless to say, I was unhappy. I uninstalled version 9 and reinstalled 7.3, but for some reason things didn't work out and I had even more problems. I did some searching and came across WinDVD 9 from Corel. It supports both HD formats and is cheaper than what Cyberlink wanted for just the upgrade.

The full (not the upgrade) version of PowerDVD 8 will co-exist with PowerDVD 7 and both run normally. I don't know if PowerDVD 9 works the same way or not.  Apparently the upgrade mucks with common settings.

I'll likely be looking at WinDVD next time i need to upgrade.
Bad movie?  You're soaking in it!

I got the same message for Quantum of Solace and went ahead and upgraded to PowerDVD 9 too.
However 7.3 remained on my machine. I don't remember picking a special version or asking for a full version (I think that was more expensive).

You might want to check out Arcsoft's Total Movie Theatre Platinum.  It supports both Bu-Ray and HD-DVD.  There is a 15 day trial version on their site.

Got an upgrade offer from Cyberlink for PowerDVD 8 (i own v7 Deluxe but am using OEM v7 Ultra which came with my Blu-Ray/HD-DVD ROM drive and supports both formats).

I was looking at the info on their website and noted mention of Blu-Ray support but no mention of HD-DVD.

So i emailed them to confirm this and their response was:

Thank you for contacting CyberLink Online Support.

We understand your concern related with HD DVD playback support in PowerDVD 8.0

We would like inform you that HD DVD playback is not supported in PowerDVD 8.0

Just an FYI.

Thanks for the heads up warning. No PowerDVD 8 for me

Have you tried it with HD DVD? I can't find it listed among the features...

I know, I could install the trial version, but I don't want to install something that might conflict with my (still working) copy of PowerDVD.

It works great with HD DVD and I have had it installed alongside Power DVD without any conflicts at all. It even integrates with Media Centre, unlike PowerDVD 7 or 8.

They just released version 3 and even though it still supports HD-DVD for some reason they don't list it as being suppported.

There are some reported issues with lip sync from some of the HD-DVD users with the new version 3 that was just released. But, you could try out the trial and see if you will experience the same issue as some others have reported.
