Redmond is the home of Microsoft and the area is the home of companies like Bungie (Halo) and Valve (Half-Life). There is a lot of money in that area. | | | Schultzy - http://www.michaelschultz.net grenactics - The art of skillfully fraggin one’s opponent with the use of grenades or other compact explosive devices that are thrown by hand or projected. |

The biggest reason: No teenage kids are going to pay that much and no parent is going to pay that much to bring their younger kids. That right there is worth the price of admission. In Australia most of these cinemas have age limits (I think 16 from memory) because they are licensed premised (licensed to serve alcohol). The 16-18s (if that's the correct age group) must be supervised. A few (my one included) are purely 18+, regardless of the movie's rating. | | | Adelaide Movie Buffs (info on special screenings, contests, bargains, etc. relevant to Adelaideans... and contests/bargains for other Aussies too!) |

However, the price makes it a special treat, and I carefully select movies to see in this setup (I currently have a gift voucher for it). The biggest downside is that you and your partner both have a wide armrest each on both sides, so are quite some distance apart. The food is much better than regular cinema food (and costs more!) but you can't get the standard cinema-fare like choc-tops and popcorn, which is a bit of a shame. W0m6at, I have also been to what is Gold Class in Austrlia and did have choc-tops and popcorn. And for the record the only two times I have been to these cinemas that I can remember off hand were LOTHR: The Two Towers & Star Wars: Episode 3 Of course the big thing is no kids with mobile phones and ipods ruining your Cinema experience. Also must point out there are also similar setups with the other chains like Hoyts and AMC. And for what it is worth here is Village's website with their advertisement video: http://www.villagecinemas.com.au/goldclass/ |

| Posted: | | | | Usually, I still go to the Admiral Drive-in that still cost $6 or $8 bucks to get into, and they have a double feature! We load up on wine coolers, popcorn, pizza, bug spray and our lawn chairs to have a blast.
But the price at $35?? Mostly, this is why I got a 62 inch HDTV widescreen + DVD player + a great popcorn popper= less money to spend in the long run. Print out a couple of Movie Gallery coupons or Rent free from the local library and I can save some money on movies! Now, I am trying to convence my wife to let me put in a keg with a bar tap, and movie theaters will be the thing of the past for me...maybe. |

Top ticket price is $11.00, but there are many discount times and free preview showings. All day Monday and Tuesday is only $5.00. Best theater I've ever been to with very reasonable prices. $35 a ticket is fantasy land for some Wall Street investor types. |

| Posted: | | | | There are some very good points in this thread.
I'll bet this is a response to people not going to theaters as much anymore. Heck, why would they as the sound and picture quality are probably better at home.
I'm convinced this is why most movies seem to be marketed toward fourteen year olds these days -- they're still going because it is something to do away from their parents.
We have a lounge type movie theater in our area, but they show movies that are pretty old (at or near the end of their theatrical run). They have beer and it is pretty noisy, so their primary audience is folks just out of college in their early to mid twenties. And the ticket price is $12, not $35.

| Posted: | | | | When I go to the movies, it's with my kids usually. We catch a matinée and at our local theatre (not a Cineplex or other BIG theatre). Matinée seats are all $6, as opposed to the normal Cineplex prices of $9.25 each, or a SilverCity theatre at $10.95 each. At some of the BIG movie premieres, they often times have prize packs. When we went and saw Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, my son won a movie poster and a book collection (the first 4 HP books). We've also won swag when we went and saw Shrek 3, The Chronicles of Narnia and others. If anyone happens to be in the Hamilton, Ontario area, I strongly suggest to check them out. In order to conserve the "almighty dollar" we have to watch where we go. Granted, moved are delayed maybe a week or two, but who really cares? 2 Adults, 2 kids (8 & 4) @ The Movie Palace: Tickets: $24.00 2 Large, 2 Med drinks, 2 Large Popcorns: $24.00 Total Cost: $48.00@ Cineplex Odeon: Tickets: $37.00 2 Large, 2 Med drinks, 2 Large Popcorns: $32 Total Cost: $69.00@ SilverCity: Tickets: $43.80 2 Large, 2 Med drinks, 2 Large Popcorns: $35 Total Cost: $78.80Now you can see why we opt for our little local theatre. Besides, it's only 2 blocks from our house. We usually time it so we can go next door (around the corner) and bowl a game of 5 pin first. Back to the poll, $35 for a ticket??? Are you f'n nuts?? That would make the cost $140 + concessions!!! | | | Peter
